"We live in an era when the great world has grown small. What happens in distant places is known, and, more importantly, experienced everywhere, by almost everybody, immediately and unavoidably. The central challenge of your collective lives will be developing ways to manage in this miniaturized world of immediacy a vast richness of race, of faith, of culture, of thought. If you are to avoid the kind of destructive balkanization that can threaten to shred the fabric of civility on a global scale, you will be forced to create pathways of comprehension and communication across traditional divisions."
Dr. John E. Sexton
Speaking to the NYU Graduating Class, May 2006
John Edward Sexton, the fifteenth president of New York University, is also the Benjamin Butler Professor of Law and NYU Law School's Dean Emeritus, having served as dean for fourteen years. Dr. Sexton received a B.A. in History (1963) from Ford-ham College, an M.A. in Comparative Religion (1965) and a Ph.D. in History of American Religion (1978) from Ford-ham University, and a J.D. magna cum laude (1979) from Harvard Law School
He has written extensively on the role of the university in American life and is interested in the interplay be-tween law, faith, reason, and education in today's society.
The Bernard Manekin Lecture is made possible by an endowment grant from the Clark Charitable Foundation.
