What We Do
ICJS Fall Mini-Course
Open to friends and members of the ICJSTeaching Women
A course taught by
Rosann M. Catalano, Ph.D.
The work of feminist biblical scholars (both women and men) over the past quarter century has disclosed the patriarchal worldview of the Bible. As twin heirs of this tradition, both Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity adopted this same worldview as each developed in the earliest centuries of the Common Era. While there are significant differences among feminist biblical scholars, all agree that the social context of these formative writings was hierarchically structured and male-oriented, and that the voices and contributions of women were marginalized, subverted, and ignored. In response, these scholars have developed new ways of reading texts that both disclose and recover the voices of women. This mini-course will follow the lead of these scholars in the exam-ination of narratives from the Tanakh/Old Testament, the New Testament, and rabbinic literature in which women play a pivotal teaching role that often challenges the social, political, economic, and/or religious status quo. Together we will immerse ourselves in close read-ings and discussions of some of these texts, and in the process perhaps be once more surprised to discover new possibilities within our ancient tradtions.
The ICJS invites you to bring a friend, join old friends, and make new ones in an atmosphere of lively exchange and stimulating discussion!
