Timely Talk
Pope Benedict, Holocaust Denial, and the Society of Saint Pius X
Video Excerpts
While watching the videos, ask yourself the following questions:
- To what degree do you think Jewish/Catholic relations are in jeopardy?
- What do you imagine would be the most appropriate responses to this issue from each community's perspective — Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant? Are there parameters to such responses, and if so, what are they?
- What is the role of the "outsider" regarding issues that reflect internal conflicts, in this case, for the character and identity of the Roman Catholic Church? Are there constructive, albeit critical contributions that Jews can make? Do Protestants have an appropriate voice in these deliberations? Are there lines that should not be crossed without putting into jeopardy the bonds of interfaith dialogue and friendship? Are there circumstances when the integrity of a religious community demands serious risks be taken, including giving offense to the other and even disrupting the equilibrium of the relationship? Are there issues that are so imperative that call forth such a response?
