    Disarming Texts:
Jews and Christians Reflect on How Their Minds Have Been Changed -- An Evening With Walter Brueggemann and Peter Ochs

Dr. Walter Brueggemann is Professor Emeritus of Old Testa-ment at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia. He holds a Ph.D. from Union Seminary, New York, and a Ph.D. from St. Louis University. Through his teaching, lecturing, and writing, Brueggemann has effectively demonstrated the signifi-cance of the Old Testament for our fractured world today. Recognized as the preeminent interpreter of the ancient texts in relation to questions posed by a variety of academic disciplines, he has shown the way toward a compelling under-standing of the major components of the faith and life of ancient Israel.

Dr. Peter Ochs is the Edgar Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies at the University of Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and an M.A. from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Dr. Ochs explores modern Jewish philosophy and theology, the history of Jewish thought and Jewish ethics, and the philosophy of religion.

An ICJS Free Public Program on Wednesday, April 18, at Chizuk Amuno Congregation, 8100 Stevenson Road, Baltimore, MD 21208 at 8:00 p.m.

This ICJS free public program brings these renowned scholars to Baltimore for an interfaith evening about our shared sacred texts. In addition, we have asked Drs. Brueggemann and Ochs to address these questions:

    • Tell us about your own intellectual and spiritual odysseys.
    • What have you come to believe are the most pressing challenges that your own community faces today?
    • Why do you hold on to your tradition in the face of dysfunction and conflicts?
    • In what ways do you think your tradition will need to continue to change to remain faithful to itself and to God?

This event is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Chautauqua Society funded by the Peggy and Yale Gordon Trust.

For more information, or to register, please call the ICJS at 410-523-7227.
