In A Word Volume 3, Spring 2001 Recommended Reading Claman, Henry N. Jewish Images in the Christian Church: Art as the Mirror of the Jewish-Christian Conflict 200-1250. C. E. Mercer University press, 2000. Over the past forty years, a number of outstanding studies have brought the anguished history of Jewish-Christian relations into public view. Historians have carefully traced the evolving dynamics of con-tempt by scrutinizing the sacred writings and traditions of the early, medieval, and modern Christian communities. Theolo-gians have vigorously begun to explore ways to neutralize this dangerous legacy, and biblical scholars are increasingly presenting new approaches and interpretations of ancient texts to contain the polemical patterns of fear and hostility. In recent years, some notable studies of the Jewish-Christian encounter have emerged that explore the interplay of our two traditions by examining the images enshrined within sacred and decorative arts. Mercer University Press has published a hand-some volume by Henry N. Claman that surveys the evolving images of Jews in Christian art. Although Claman comes to this challenge without the usual professional credentials and largely bases his findings on secondary sources, he produces an engaging and highly readable overview of an enormously complex history. This volume is packed with illustrations and some exquisite color plates that demonstrate the power of visual piety. Anyone who reads this book will start to view the sacred spaces that Christians inhabit with new eyes.
