The Institute     Volume 9, Autumn 1999

    Scripture Forum
    The Ten Commandments

Over the past five years, the ICJS has brought together a group of rabbis and Christian clergy to study sacred texts, to explore contrasting and conflicting interpretations within and between our two traditions, and to consider the ways in which these writings continue to shape the religious imaginations of our respective communities.

The topic of this year's Scripture Forum was the Ten Com-mandments. The first session featured Dr. Walter Harrelson, Professor Emeritus at Vanderbilt Divinity School, and Rabbi Tzvi-Hersh Weinreb of Congregation Shomrei Emunah, Balti-more, who each presented papers on the topic, "What is the Place of the Decalogue in the Jewish and Christian Traditions?" The group of approximately forty participants met for four additional sessions throughout 1998-99. Rabbi Gustav Buch-dahl of Temple Emanuel, and Dr. Roger Gench of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, Park Avenue, read papers focusing on the first commandment, Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me.

In February, Rabbi Gila Ruskin of Chevrei Tzedek, and Dr. Christopher Leighton, Executive Director of the ICJS, pre-sented reflections on Thou Shalt Not Make for Thyself a Graven Image. The third commandment, Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of the Lord in Vain, was the topic of papers de-livered by Dr. Rosann Catalano, ICJS Roman Catholic Scholar, and Rabbi Donald Berlin, Senior Rabbi of Temple Oheb Shalom. Dr. Bruce Birch, Dean of Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC, presented a paper at the final session on the topic, Remember the Sabbath Day to Sanctify It.

The remainder of the Decalogue will be the subject of a Scripture Forum Retreat, planned for Spring 2000.
