    Students Study the Holocaust

Mercy High School students are deeply moved by their trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

1998-99 marked the fifth year of collaboration between the ICJS and Mercy High School, Baltimore. As a direct result of having participated in the 1994-95 ICJS-sponsored Schindler's List Project, Mercy High's Social Studies Department revised its junior year curriculum to include a more extensive, in-depth study of the Holocaust. The program culminates in an all-day class trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The entire junior class is accompanied by several members of the Mercy High faculty, along with a num-ber of parent-chaperones.

Dr. Rosann Catalano, ICJS Roman Catholic Scholar, has been a consultant to the Social Studies Department in both the design and the implementation of the USHMM trip since 1994. In addition, she has collaborated in the creation of a series of reflections and activities that encourage both students and parent-guests to reflect more seriously on the impact and legacy of the Holocaust. On the morning of the trip, Dr. Catalano provides an overview of and an orientation to the Museum. Students consistently find this trip deeply moving and often note on evaluations that it makes the study of history much more relevant and immediate to their lives.
