The Institute     Volume 7, Autumn 1997

Excerpts: Letter from the Members of the Genesis Prison Project Group to Bill Moyers

    Dear Mr. Moyers,

We pray this letter will find you in the best of health and spirits.

We have just completed a Genesis program sponsored by the Institute for Christian & Jewish Studies in Baltimore . . . We are grateful to you for producing this program and for [the op-portunity to explore it] in a prison setting.

As participants in this pilot program in Maryland, we feel that we have had a surprising and energizing experience. As a group we feel that we have just begun the dialogue and would like very much to continue to discuss Genesis. We also believe that additional groups of men should be engaged in this dia-logue in this prison, and in other prisons in Maryland.

We feel that we have found a connection to each other and that our level of tolerance for others has been raised because of this experience. In this no man’s land, religion is often used to discriminate and to cause animosity and grief . . .

Again, we thank you and Director Leighton for remembering us and including us in this monumental undertaking.

    Sincerely,

Members of the Genesis Program/MD House of Corrections

    The Response from Bill Moyers

[To the Library Coordinator of the Correctional Education Libraries at the Maryland State Department of Education]

I was very touched by your letter and the one from the inmates. On a radio program in metropolitan New York this morning to promote the repeat of the Genesis series on public television here, I read excerpts from their letter and had a very good response from callers. Please tell the men I was very pleased to hear from them . . .

. . . I am sending you a dozen copies of the resource guide to the series. I am sure you will find the right place for them.

    Sincerely,

    Bill Moyers
