The Institute Volume 3, Summer 1993 Dr. Carol Rittner, R.S.M., the former Director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity in New York, whose documentary film The Courage to Care was nominated for an Academy Award, will join the staff of the ICJS this summer. Dr. Rittner is a world-renowned scholar of the Holocaust and Christian-Jewish relations and lectures widely in both the United States and abroad. She has edited several books, including Memory Offended: The Auschwitz Convent Controversy (with Dr. John K. Roth), Elie Wiesel: Between Memory and Hope, and the recently published Different Voices: Women and the Holocaust (co-edited with Dr. Roth). Dr. Rittner and Dr. Roth are Series Co-editors for the new Greenwood Press series, Christianity & the Holocaust: Core Issues. In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Rittner has organized several international conferences and seminars that have featured many of the world's outstanding religious, political, and literary leaders: "Facing the 21st Century: Threats and Promises" (France, 1988), "The Anatomy of Hate" (U.S., 1989 and Norway, 1990), "Education Against Hate: An Imperative for Our Time" (Israel, 1990), and "Beyond Hate: Living with Our Deepest Differences" (Northern Ireland, 1992). While Dr. Rittner will continue these efforts in conjunction with the ICJS, she will coordinate the ICJS Washington Theological Consortium Project, an innovative seminary education program. This program will highlight the urgency of teaching the next generation of religious leaders the vital necessity of affirming the best in their own tradition while remaining open to the in-sights of other faith communities. Dr. Rittner will also organize the proceedings and results of this project for publication and distribution to seminaries throughout the United States.
