The Institute     Volume 14, Autumn 2004

    New Board Welcome

We are pleased to welcome two new trustees who will begin their service this fall.

Dr. Jean Harvey Baker is a professor of history at Goucher College. Born and raised in Baltimore, she was educated at local schools, attended Vassar College and graduated from Goucher College. She received her master's and doctorate de-grees in history from Johns Hopkins University and has taught at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. Dr. Baker is the author of ten books on various aspects of American history, and while at Goucher has taught courses on minority groups in 19th-century America. She has served on the board of the Maryland Institute of Art and the Urban League and is currently a trustee of the Maryland Historical Society.

Deborah Winston Callard graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1960, where she concentrated her studies on the world's religions and was inspired by Joseph Campbell's course "Folklore and Myth." Her professional life began in 1979 at Johns Hopkins, where she worked in development. She retired in 1994 as Executive Director of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine. Following three years as a fundraising consultant, she moved to Boston for six years, where she became Director of Stewardship for Trinity Church, Copley Square. Re-retired and back in Baltimore, Deborah currently serves on the boards of the Parks and People Foundation, WYPR 88.1 (Your NPR News Station), and on the Committee of Visitors of Goucher College. She is the mother of five children and grandmother of seven and counting.
