The Institute Volume 10, Autumn 2000 Law in the Jewish and Christian Imaginations "Law in the Jewish and Christian Imaginations" was the topic of the ICJS Clergy Scripture Forum, held on May 25, 2000 at Temple Oheb Shalom. Dr. Peter Ochs, Bronfman Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Virginia, was the scholar-in-residence. The day-long program brought together a diverse cross-section of Christian and Jewish clergy, affording them considerable time to study and learn together. Dr. Ochs orchestrated the inquiry through a series of text studies that ranged from Genesis to Paul's Letter to the Romans, from the Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, to the Christian biblical scholar E. P. Sanders. The forty Jewish and Christian participants moved from small group study to plenary discussion, and in the process discovered new ways of understanding how ethical and theological claims are rooted differently in our respective religious traditions. One of the virtues of the Scripture Forum is that it provides clergy the opportunity to study with outstanding scholars, to explore cutting-edge issues in the Jewish-Christian encounter, to learn from one another, and to forge ongoing relationships in the process.
