Interfaith Marriage Colloquium
Without taking a position on the desirability of interfaith marriage, we considered views in different traditions and individuals’ experiences in their own communities.
The occurrence of interfaith marriages is a welcome indicator of American religious tolerance and respect for others. However, interfaith marriages are also a serious concern in our communities. They raise complex questions about, for example, setting boundaries, hospitality to outsiders, and participation in ritual life. They are not only relevant to congregational religious life but to home and family life as well. Further, interfaith marriages are relevant to evolving relationships between members of different religious groups, for they raise serious questions about our views of and interactions with other traditions. We organized a series of sessions for religious professionals on the challenges of interfaith marriage. Without taking a position on the desirability of interfaith marriage, we considered views in different traditions and individuals’ experiences in their own communities.
