Lauren F. Winner. Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Spiritual Life. Algonquin Books, 2002. Lauren Winner
is the daughter of a non-practicing Jewish father and
a non-practicing Southern Baptist mother. As a high school student, she becomes active in her Reform synagogue in Charlottesville, Va. She is drawn towards a more traditional practice of Judaism, discovers that she is not considered Jewish by Orthodox and Conservative Jews, and undergoes an Orthodox conversion. She becomes a leader of the Orthodox Jewish community
at Columbia University, wearing the typical Modern Orthodox “uniform” of long skirts and long-sleeved blouses. Eventually, she begins to dream about Jesus and becomes convinced that these dreams come from God. As a graduate student in Cambridge, she joins the Anglican church.
Lauren Winner chronicles this dual conversion narrative in her engaging new book. Christian and Jewish readers alike will find much in her story that is illuminating and much that is troubling. The book is worth reading, even though one may leave the book concluding that Lauren’s journey is far from over.
