Links to Resources to Learn about Islam

In the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, many people have expressed an interest in learning more about Islam. While Islam is not part of the focus of the ICJS, the following list of resources, compiled by Carol Bier, may prove helpful.

Many universities where Middle East Studies are taught have federal funding to support Middle East Centers that compile resource lists for K-12 teachers and educators and host public programs to explore various aspects of Middle Eastern cultural traditions. Several of those with the widest range of resources include the following:

Alan Godlas' "Islamic Studies" Website
http://www.uga.edu/islam
An excellent resource that includes material on Islam, Arabic, and Religion (focusing on Western religions). This site is particularly intended to be of use to students and teachers at all levels, but it will also appeal to members of the general public who are interested in a non-polemical view of Islam (including Sunni Islam, Shi'ism, and Sufism) and, to a lesser extent, of Judaism and Christianity.

University of Texas at Austin's Middle East Network Information Center (MENIC)
http://menic.utexas.edu/menic
Outstanding home page with buttoms for countries, subject headings, and resources for better under-standing of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, with links to important news articles, media, and editorials.

University of Michigan's Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS)
http://umich.edu/~iinet/cmenas
Extensive resources on Middle East and neighboring regions for use by teachers and educators, K-12 and college.

New York University's Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies
http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/program/neareast
Promotes a more informed understanding of the contemporary Middle East and neighboring regions
from North Africa to Central Asia, including historical processes that have shaped the present. Offers public events and forums; provides media briefings for news professionals and teaching resources for high school
and college teachers.

University of Pennsylvania's Middle East Center (MEC)
http://mec.sas.upenn.edu
A national resource center; outreach coordinator is available for consultation by teachers and schools on units, basic course preparation, workshops and other programs. Curricular materials are available on short-term loan to teachers (art and architecture, Islam, Middle East history and politics, literature in translation, Middle Eastern immigrants, stereotyping, women, and general reference).

The Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding
http://cmcu.georgetown.edu

University of Virginia's Middle East Study Program (MESP)
http://faculty.virginia.edu/mesp/mideastre.html
Web page offers quick and easy access to Middle East resources arranged by organizations; newspapers, journals, and documentary sources.

Harvard University's Center of Middle Eastern Studies (CMES)
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/%7Emideast
Offers a comprehensive selection of links, arranged by subjects, including newspapers, radio/TV, journals, organizations, general information resources, and by countries listed alphabetically.

Teaching for Change

Each of these outreach centers maintains lists of recommended books and articles about the Islamic
world and the Middle East, teaching resources, useful Web links; some host teacher-training workshops and programs for public education. Some have films and videos available for rental for educational use. Several offer materials via the Web; others have a mail order catalogue.
